Deia, for instance, has always been very popular with artists, composers and painters, including the renowned poets Robert Graves and Laura Riding. The town of Valldemossa is known throughout the world due to its connections with Frederik Chopin and George Sand as well as many other artists and musicians. It is without doubt, one of the most picturesque villages on the island with its narrow streets and beautiful gardens. A major attraction is the Cartoixa which dates from the 14th century and where Chopin composed many of his works. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones who are frequent summer visitors to their home on the island are major contributors to the cultural life of Mallorca and have set up the Costa Nord cultural centre.
